Orquestra de Sao Paulo
Founded in 1953, this Brazilian state orchestra has undergone a highly
successful reconstruction process led by the Artistic Director John
Neschling. The orchestra interprets traditional symphonic repertoire and
works by Brazilian composers, touring in South America and abroad. The
Orquestra de São Paulo’s (OSESP)home is one of the most innovative
architectural structures in the Americas, the Sala São Paulo. Its debut
North American tour in fall 2002 took them coast-to-coast on an 18-city
tour and was well received by critics and audiences alike. In November
2006, the orchestra will return to the US for a 14-city concert tour of
the East Coast with cellist Antonio Meneses.
Composer and conductor John Neschling has amassed an impressive resume
both during his tenure with OSESP and prior to taking the position of
Music Director in São Paulo, Brazil. Neschling composed the score to the
Academy Award – winning film Kiss of the Spider Woman, and he has worked
with many of the world’s greatest orchestras and soloists, as well as
having recorded an arsenal of award-winning discs.
"Neschling...takes the music at face value, emphasizing contrasts and
letting his orchestra show off its many strengths - excellent horns and
brass; rich strings with a notably firm viola section; woodwinds pure in
tone. Its Brahms was spacious and dramatic and unleashed a muscular,
fierce climax. A powerful show." Pierre Ruhe
- Atlanta Journal-Constitution, November 14, 2002
"In the one work on the program in which the orchestra's performance could
be easily measured against the international standard - the Brahms Second
Symphony - both the quality of the ensemble's sound and the level of
energy it brought to its playing were extremely high" Allan Kozinn
- The New York Times, November 13, 2002
"The orchestra played throughout with impressive energy and precision."
Chris Pasles
