In 1957, Maria Callas sang La Sonnambula at the
Edinburgh Festival, but withdrew before the final performances. They were
sung to huge international acclaim by a young Renata Scotto, who went on
to make a specialty of the role.
Amina, a simple village girl, is believed to be unfaithful to her lover,
but she is vindicated when it is discovered that her nighttime wanderings
are carried out in her sleep. Bellini created a beautiful score of true
bel canto style that has attracted leading coloratura sopranos since its
premiere in 1831.
Soprano Leah Partridge (La traviata 2003, Lucia di Lammermoor 2005,
Rigoletto 2006) returns to Florida Grand Opera as the famous sleepwalker
in a new and exciting production directed by the same Renata Scotto, and
conducted by Richard Bonynge, whose wife, Dame Joan Sutherland, was also a
famous Amina.
